Creation Care

Fifth Mark of Mission - Care for Creation

Along with many other churches and community groups, we seek to care for creation, putting into practice the Anglican Communion's Fifth Mark of Mission:

  • To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

As part of the global church we are called to care not just for God’s creation, but for our brothers and sisters all over the world who face having their families uprooted and their livelihoods destroyed the effects of climate change.

- Archbishop Justin Welby wrote these words in his introduction to the book "Saying Yes to Life"

The Church of England has adopted this challenge and set ambitious targets and put in place plans to achieve it. In February 2020, General Synod voted to set a target for the whole Church of England of achieving ‘net-zero’ carbon by 2030. In July 2022 they approved a routemap after completing studies to understand the solutions, costs and challenges to meet the target. Our Diocese is also supporting this goal.

Our Eco Team and how you can help

We have an Eco team and are proud that Christ Church has achieved a Silver EcoChurch award, however there is more to do. We are keen for members of our church and community to join us in caring for the natural world and our global neighbours.

Here are 6 effective things that you can do to help:

  1. Switch to sustainable transport – fly and drive less or share more
  2. Insulate our homes and reduce the energy to heat/cool them
  3. Switch to renewable energy supplier or invest in your own solar etc.
  4. Reduce meat and dairy consumption – try and go vegan once a week
  5. Support nature to absorb more carbon – plant trees/protect forests
  6. Pray for those impacted by climate change and those working to mitigate it

More will be added to this page in the future but for now please see the first of our regular newsletters below.
