The Purpose of Life: Creation

Do you know why you are here? Some people don’t know why they are here. That’s why they are often sad or lonely. Do you know why you are here? You are not here by chance. You are not here by accident. You were created by God for a purpose. Do you know what his purpose is? Lets find out!

1. To Know Him Personally

God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, in our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26)

Later we read that God and Adam and Eve walked in the garden together.  You too were planned for God’s pleasure. To make God’s day! God didn’t have to create you, but he wanted to. God didn’t create you just to be like one of the animals. You were created in his image – to be like God. And he sent Jesus to show us what God is like and help us make it. His wants you to know him, to love him, trust him, obey him and become like him. He wants you to enjoy him forever and ever. John writes,

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)

So your first purpose in life is what?
To know God personally. You were planned for God’s pleasure. You have a 2nd purpose in life.

2. To Share Him Lovingly

After God had made Adam, he said,

“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

God never intended us to be alone. That’s why we are born into a family – to help each other – male and female – to complement each other.

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number.” (Genesis 1:28)

God’s purpose is that we multiply. He wants us to share in creating life.

To have babies and help them grow up to know and love God too. That is why we like babies. God put it in our hearts. That is why we are born into a natural family with a mum and a dad, with aunts and uncles and grandparents. God wants us to share him. He also wants us to born again into another family too. It is called the Church family and we are all brothers and sisters when we come to know God personally.

“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.” (Ephesians 1:11)

So God wants us to know Him personally and share Him lovingly.

3. To Serve Him Willingly

“The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15)

This world belongs to God. He has given it to us to look after. He wants us to take care of it.

And he has give us skills and talents to serve.

You may not know what God’s plan is for your life yet. But you know what games you like to play. You know what subjects you like at school.  And you may already know what you are good at. These are early signs of God’s plan for your life. You are here for a purpose.  Sunday Club and school are two ways God will use to help you discover your special role in his world.

“Figure out what will please Christ then do it.” (Ephesians 1:5)

You were made for a mission. We are here to discover it, develop it and demonstrate it.
But more important even than what you do is who you are becoming. Because you were created to become like Christ. To know him, to share him and to serve him, through the church and in the world, willingly, joyfully, lovingly, forever and ever, amen. That’s our purpose.
